The short answer is simple: do not place access-point cables by counting rooms or drawing equal circles on a floor plan. Start with the places that need service, study what sits between them, coordinate each mounting location with the other trades, and leave enough flexibility to validate the system after the home is finished.
Start with coverage zones, not an access-point count
There is no dependable rule that says a custom home needs one access point for a certain number of square feet. Two homes with the same area can behave very differently. A long single-story plan, a compact three-story home, and a house built around a courtyard do not create the same wireless problem.
We begin by marking the zones where the network must work well:
- Primary living spaces, bedrooms, offices, and media rooms
- Garages, workshops, and utility areas with connected equipment
- Covered patios, outdoor kitchens, pools, and detached structures
- Entries, driveways, and gates that depend on connected devices
- Areas with concentrated use, such as a family room where several people may stream, work, and control the home at the same time
This is also the time to identify what should be wired instead of relying on Wi-Fi. Televisions, desktop computers, network switches, access points, and other stationary equipment often deserve a planned cable when the system design supports it. A good wireless plan is stronger when Wi-Fi is reserved for the devices that actually need to move.
Read the construction before choosing locations
Wireless signals do not experience every wall, floor, and finish the same way. A preliminary plan should account for the building itself, not just the room names.

Those can include masonry, tile assemblies, mirrors, metal, concrete floors, large appliances, built-ins, fireplaces, and mechanical spaces. The point is not to assign a fixed signal-loss number to every material. It is to identify where the plan needs more care and where a second cable path may be prudent.

Match the location to the access point's mounting design
Many access points used in professionally designed home networks are intended for a particular mounting orientation. A model designed for a ceiling location should not be moved to a wall, set on a shelf, or buried above a ceiling without checking its instructions and expected coverage pattern.
During plan review, we check:
- Compatibility between the surface and mounting hardware
- Concealed cable entry without a loose loop at the device
- Access for future service and replacement
- The intended mounting orientation for the selected access point
- Final millwork, beams, cabinets, and decorative treatments around the location
The final product may not be selected when rough-in begins. That is normal. The cable and mounting plan should still preserve a usable location without pretending that every access point installs the same way.
Reserve wired backhaul to every planned access point
An access point needs a dependable connection to the rest of the home network. In new construction, the cleanest opportunity is usually a dedicated network cable from each planned access-point location back to the network equipment.
That route needs more thought than drawing a line between two points. We check the origin in the technology closet, the switch location, cable pathways, framing transitions, ceiling access, and the termination point at the device. If the selected access point uses Power over Ethernet, the switch, cable, and power budget must be designed for that hardware rather than assumed.
Wireless mesh can be useful in an existing home where new cable is difficult. A custom build gives the team a better option: put wired backhaul where it belongs while the framing is open. Even when the initial plan uses fewer access points, a spare cable or accessible pathway to a carefully chosen future location can protect the home from a disruptive retrofit later.
Coordinate every ceiling location on one plan
Ceilings fill up quickly. Access points compete for clean space with recessed lights, pendants, speakers, smoke detectors, cameras, HVAC registers, sprinklers, beams, coffers, ceiling fans, and decorative details. If each trade lays out its devices separately, the finished ceiling can look accidental.
We review access-point locations with the reflected ceiling plan and the latest lighting, AV, mechanical, fire-protection, and interior drawings. The goal is not to force the access point into the visual center of a room. It is to find a location that supports the wireless design and still respects the architecture.
Field conditions matter too. A location that looked open on an early plan may land on framing, ductwork, blocking, or a revised light fixture. The rough-in team should confirm each position against current drawings and the actual ceiling before leaving the cable.
Do not hide the device until it cannot do its job
Homeowners and designers often want technology to disappear. We share that goal, but concealment has limits.
An access point placed inside a cabinet, behind a television, above an inaccessible ceiling, or deep in a crowded equipment space may look clean while creating a poor service location or an unnecessary obstruction. A discreet, intentional device location is usually a better result than hiding it in the nearest closet and hoping coverage survives.
If the visible device is a concern, settle the preferred finish, profile, trim relationship, and sightline early. That gives the designer and integrator time to choose a compatible approach instead of relocating the cable after paint and millwork are complete.
Plan exterior coverage as its own problem
Coverage at the edge of the house does not guarantee a dependable connection across a patio, pool deck, driveway, gate, or detached building. Exterior construction, distance, orientation, and the location of outdoor devices all change the plan.
ETG marks the exterior zones that need service and the devices expected in each one. Outdoor audio control, televisions, cameras, gate equipment, irrigation controls, and a homeowner's phone do not always sit in the same place. A covered patio may need a different solution from a detached garage or a long driveway.
Outdoor locations also need hardware suited to the environment. A signal reaching the patio is not permission to move an indoor model outside. Exposure changes the equipment decision.
Before rough-in, confirm that the environmental rating and mounting instructions fit the location, then trace how the cable enters, where water drains, and how a technician will reach the device later.

Protect service access and future replacement
Today's hardware will not be there forever. Standards change. So does the way a family uses the house. The rough-in should allow a future access point to come down and its replacement to go up without opening a finished ceiling.
Before walls close, we look for:
- A labeled cable that reaches the intended termination point with adequate service length
- A route that does not trap the cable behind permanent millwork or inaccessible construction
- A mounting location that can be opened and serviced without damaging a decorative finish
- A pathway or spare cable where the plan shows a realistic future need
- Clear photos and records showing where concealed cable and pathways run
These details are small on the construction schedule. They become expensive when a ceiling has to be cut because a cable was left short, buried, or moved without documentation.
Validate coverage after the home is finished
A floor-plan review is a starting point, not a promise that every radio setting is final. Finished materials, installed furnishings, neighboring networks, and the selected hardware affect the completed environment.
After trim-out, the network should be commissioned and checked in the real spaces where people will use it. That includes walking the important indoor and outdoor zones, confirming devices connect as intended, reviewing roaming between access points, and adjusting the system where the measurements support a change.
