Home Theater Prewire Checklist for a Custom Home

Plan a custom home theater before drywall by coordinating seating, screen, speakers, projector, power, cable paths, lighting, HVAC, and documentation.

A home theater prewire should follow the room design, not lead it. In a Houston custom home, the team needs to settle the seating, image, speaker layout, equipment location, lighting, HVAC, and finish details before anyone closes the walls and ceiling.

The deadline is earlier than most people expect. Speaker wire can be pulled during low-voltage rough-in, but the positions only mean something if the primary seats, screen wall, projector or display, and construction details have already been reviewed together.

Define How the Room Will Be Used

A dedicated theater, a family media room, and a game room with a large display are different projects. The first prewire question is not how many speakers to install. It is what the room needs to do.

  • Is the room mainly for movies, sports, gaming, music, or a mix?
  • Will the seating be fixed, movable, or arranged in more than one row?
  • Does the client expect a projection system, a television, or a decision after the room is framed?

  • Which controls should be available at the entry, seats, remote, or wall keypad?

Those answers shape the hidden work. A projector path is different from a television backbox. A second seating row affects sightlines, riser power, step lighting, and speaker positions. A room that shares walls with bedrooms may need a different construction conversation from a detached media room.

Lock the Room Layout Before Wiring

The seating plan establishes the reference point for the screen, speakers, and projector. A rough furniture symbol on an early floor plan is not enough.

During plan review, ETG checks the actual chair dimensions, recline clearance, row spacing, aisle width, door swing, platform depth, and the path people will use to enter and leave. In the framed room, the team should mark the front and back of each row on the floor. That makes conflicts visible before wire positions become permanent.

The screen height and size should be reviewed from the intended seats. The same is true for speaker coverage. If the seating shifts after prewire, a centered ceiling speaker may no longer be centered on the listeners, and a projector mount may no longer match the image geometry.

For more than one row, the builder and theater designer also need to settle riser height, step locations, railings if required, floor outlets, and lighting. ETG does not treat the riser as furniture. It is part of the room construction and affects both sightlines and wiring.

Plan the Screen Wall and Display Path

The front wall needs more than a centered outlet. Its framing should match the planned image system and the front-speaker design.

For a projection room, the review includes screen size and height, border or masking conditions, wall depth, mounting support, speaker locations, subwoofer locations, and the space required behind an acoustically transparent screen if one is planned. A shallow decorative wall can leave no room for the speakers, wiring, or service access that the design assumed.

For a large television, the team needs the final display zone, mount type, backing or blocking, recessed box condition, power location, signal path, and a route that does not emerge behind millwork or visible trim. The wall elevation should show how the display relates to cabinetry, doors, sconces, and the finished ceiling.

ETG also looks for plumbing, ductwork, steel, fireplaces, and structural members that compete with the front wall. These are not problems to discover after the screen or display has been ordered.

Mark Speaker Locations From the Seating Plan

Speaker locations should come from the listener positions and the intended audio layout. They should not be spaced evenly just because the reflected ceiling plan looks cleaner that way.

The field review checks:

  • Front speaker locations in relation to the image
  • Side and rear surround locations in relation to each seating row
  • Overhead speaker positions and the ceiling construction above them
  • Clear sound paths that are not blocked by columns, tall seat backs, or millwork
  • Backboxes, brackets, blocking, or framing required by the selected speaker type
  • Wire routes that remain accessible and separated from conflicting trades
  • Subwoofer signal and power options at the locations being considered

Ceiling speakers require a combined reflected ceiling review. Joists, beams, coffers, lights, HVAC registers, sprinklers, fans, access panels, and decorative elements all compete for the same surface. When one trade moves a device, the theater layout should be checked again instead of shifting one speaker in isolation.

The final speaker models may still be under review during framing. The design still needs agreed locations, mounting conditions, wire counts, and enough physical space to support the intended performance.

Coordinate Projector, Sources, and Equipment

A projector location depends on the projector, lens, screen size, image position, and room geometry. Marking a ceiling outlet at the back of the room is not a projector plan.

Before rough-in, ETG checks the proposed mounting point against ceiling features, sightlines, framing, service clearance, ventilation, and the signal route. The builder may need blocking or a recessed condition. The electrician needs a coordinated power location. The low-voltage path should reach the mount without a visible surface cable after trim-out.

Source equipment also needs a defined home. If the receiver, processor, game systems, streaming devices, or control hardware will live outside the room, the team should confirm:

  • The exact equipment or rack location
  • Signal, control, network, and audio routes between the room and equipment
  • A serviceable pathway for cable replacement
  • Ventilation and access around heat-producing equipment
  • Network connections for fixed devices
  • How remotes, keypads, and control signals will reach the equipment

Cable selection should follow the actual run and system requirements. Certified cable types matter, but a label alone does not solve a long or inaccessible path. ETG reviews the route, bends, terminations, conduit, and future access as one system.

Coordinate Power, Lighting, HVAC, and Room Construction

The theater plan crosses several trades. The electrician handles line-voltage work. The HVAC contractor manages supply, return, air movement, and equipment requirements. The builder owns framing and sequence. The designer protects finishes and visual intent. The technology integrator needs all of those decisions to support the room layout.

ETG reviews power at the display, projector, equipment, subwoofer locations, seating or riser, and control points. Exact circuits and code compliance stay with the licensed electrician and local authority.

Lighting needs its own scene plan. General lighting, step lights, sconces, accent lighting, and service lighting should work without washing the image or creating glare at the seats. Fixture locations also need to stay clear of speakers, projector paths, acoustic treatments, and ceiling details.

HVAC matters because a quiet room can make air noise and vibration more obvious. Register and return locations should be reviewed with the seats, speakers, projector, and acoustic plan. If the equipment remains in the room, its heat and ventilation needs belong in the mechanical conversation as well.

Sound isolation and acoustic treatment are not the same thing. One limits sound transfer to adjoining spaces. The other manages sound inside the room. If either is in scope, wall assemblies, doors, penetrations, speaker backboxes, recessed lights, ducts, and finish details should be coordinated before construction closes those choices.

Walk the Framed Room With the Right People

Plans catch many conflicts. A framed-room walkthrough catches the rest.

The best time is after the room geometry is visible but before insulation and drywall. The builder, electrician, HVAC contractor, designer, and technology integrator should bring the latest plans and selections. An acoustical consultant or other specialist should join when the project scope calls for one.

Start at the seats. Confirm the floor marks, riser, aisles, and door swing. Face the screen wall and verify its height, depth, framing, speaker space, power, and signal paths. Then walk the side and rear walls, look up at every ceiling device, and finish at the projector and equipment route.

Any change should go back to the current plan. A field conversation without an updated drawing is easy to lose.

Document the Prewire Before Drywall

The last step is proof, not memory.

Before the room is covered, the closeout should include:

  • Cable labels that match the current plan

  • Measurements from fixed framing points
  • Notes on conduit, pull strings, and concealed pathways
  • Confirmation that electrical and low-voltage locations agree
  • Cable testing or verification where appropriate
  • A record of open selections that still affect trim-out
  • An updated drawing or marked plan for the field file

This record makes trim-out faster and future service less dependent on guesswork. It also gives the builder and homeowner a clear answer when a finish, fixture, or equipment choice changes later.
