Security camera placement for a custom home should start with a question that has nothing to do with camera count: what does each view need to show?
A camera over the driveway may tell you that a vehicle arrived. That does not mean it can show a plate, a driver's face, or what happened at the front door. One wide view rarely does every job well. The useful plan assigns a purpose to each location, checks that view against the architecture, and leaves the right infrastructure before the walls and exterior finishes close.

At the front of the home, separate the street, drive, gate, walk, and front-door questions. The camera watching the motor court may not be the camera that captures a person approaching the entry. If vehicle detail matters, identify the lane and the point where a vehicle slows. Do not assume a camera covering the entire drive will also deliver a readable plate in every direction, speed, and lighting condition.
Side yards often look simple on a floor plan. In the field, a long narrow run may include gates, equipment, fence returns, downspouts, exterior lights, and plants that will grow into the frame. The right position needs to see the route without staring into a nearby wall or giving most of the image to the neighbor's property.
The rear of a custom home can be more complicated than the front. Doors, glass walls, a covered patio, an outdoor kitchen, a pool, and a detached structure create several paths and depth changes. One camera tucked under the patio roof may see the seating area but miss the doors. A second view may be needed if the homeowner expects to understand both the approach and the activity at the house.
The point is not to add cameras until every inch overlaps. It is to give the important zones a clear job and remove views that do not answer a real question.
Placement Is a View Problem, Not a Camera Count
Mounting a camera as high as possible can feel safer and cleaner. It can also turn faces into the tops of heads and make the subject too small. A lower, better-aimed view may produce more useful detail, but it must still fit the architecture and remain reasonably protected from casual contact.

The best drawing marks more than a device symbol. It shows the intended direction, the key subject area, and the purpose of the view. That gives the builder, electrician, low-voltage team, and homeowner something concrete to review.
Design for Night, Weather, and a Finished Yard
Most cameras look acceptable in soft daylight. The difficult test comes after dark, during rain, when headlights enter the frame, or when outdoor lighting creates a bright foreground and a dark background.

Irrigation spray and roof runoff can leave water spots on a lens or dome. Service access matters because a camera that cannot be reached safely is less likely to be cleaned, adjusted, or replaced.

Coordinate Cabling, Power, and the Technology Closet

At the camera end, the mounting condition needs equal attention. The team should know where the cable exits, how the mount fastens, what is behind the finish, how the penetration will be sealed, and whether the camera can be removed without damaging the surrounding material. Stone, stucco, metal panels, wood ceilings, and specialty soffits may need different backing and sequencing.
A spare cable or pathway can be useful at a gate, long drive, detached building, or other location that would be difficult to reach later. It should be a deliberate project decision, not a substitute for choosing the primary view now.
Decide How Recordings Will Be Stored and Shared
Placement is only part of the system. Before selecting storage, decide how the homeowner expects to use the footage.
Start with the recording mode. Some views may call for continuous recording, while others use events or a combination. Then set a realistic expectation for how much history will be available. Decide who can watch live video, review recordings, export a clip, or change settings. If the homeowner needs access while away, document that too. The plan should also explain what remains available when the internet connection is down and how the system reports a camera, recorder, or storage problem.
Those answers affect storage capacity, network design, account structure, and support. They also keep the conversation grounded in real use instead of a recorder specification that no one has tied to an expectation.
Remote access deserves its own security check. The Federal Trade Commission recommends unique credentials, current software, encryption, two-factor authentication when available, and careful control over who can view or administer a camera system. Commission the View, Not Just the Device
A camera appearing online is not the finish line. ETG tests the view against the sentence written at the start of the plan.

Then we test the recording workflow. Can the homeowner find the event, play it back, save the right time range, and export a usable clip? Are the camera names clear? Is the system time correct? Do alerts point to a real event without turning every moving branch into a crisis?
Finally, the as-built record should match the installed system. Camera names, cable labels, equipment locations, account ownership, storage settings, and service notes should be documented for the homeowner and future support.
